The Gin Library
Located just a 10-minute drive from Ponta Delgada on the island of São Miguel in the Azores, you’ll find one of the most unique experiences in Portugal—The Gin Library.
Home to over 2,000 different gins, it holds the title for the largest gin collection in the world. When you arrive, you’re welcomed into a small, intimate courtyard where you can sip your drink while overlooking the lush countryside—an experience that feels both relaxed and refined.
What makes this spot especially memorable is its simplicity. You choose your gin, and it’s served exclusively with tonic—no alternatives, no customizations. At first, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the lack of options, but it quickly became clear that this approach is intentional. It allows each gin to truly shine, and honestly, they’ve mastered it.
There were four of us visiting, and we all ordered something different so we could sample each other’s picks. Be prepared to spend at least 15–20 minutes just browsing the collection—it’s part of the experience. The Gin Library also produces its own gin, The Ghosts of the Oceans, with each bottle supporting ocean conservation efforts and crafted with sustainability in mind.
I went with their Medusa Pink Gin for my first drink, and as someone who doesn’t typically gravitate toward gin, I was pleasantly surprised—it was absolutely delicious. They truly know what they’re doing here.
If you’re looking to take the experience a step further, you can reserve their exclusive sushi dinner. This reservation-only experience costs around €65 per person and includes sushi, dessert, and water. Guests are seated in an intimate setting designed for up to a dozen diners (or up to 18 for a private group), often gathered around the chef’s table for a shared, immersive dining experience. Unfortunately, we didn’t know about this ahead of time—but it looks incredible and is definitely worth booking in advance.
On the property, you’ll also find the stunning Solar Branco Eco Estate, a boutique eco-hotel that perfectly complements the overall experience.
One final note: the property is adults-only, so plan accordingly.
Whether you’re a gin lover or not, this is one of those places that surprises you—in the best way.
